What About Now
note: i know most of the details in this aren't gonna be correct (name of the city, name of the swords mainly), so dont kill me xD its just a random one-shot while listening to the song What About Now by Daughtry. PS: the story will be in third person, shai's POV, and toushiros POV xDD i'll be switiching POV's constantly so i thought i'd mention it here before you read and got confused. when i change POV's, i'll put a "~" along with the first letter of the name (if i'm using characters) xD so if theres no letter next to the "~" that means third person

Hitsugaya lay on a mat in Urahara's shop, chest wrapped in bandages and some dried blood still on his head that someone from squad four had forgotten to clean. He tossed and turned, sweat beginning to bead on his forehead as he slept, the memory of the fight running through his head. Another person, also layed out on a mat and wrapped up, was next to hitsugaya. A woman who was only a few inches taller than the squad 10 captain, with brunnete hair reaching her mid-back that was in a pony tail. Her eye lids hid the brilliant jade orbs she harboured, her face holding no emotion unlike her companion not 3 inches away from her mat. her skin was a fair tone, save for the bruises on her throat and left arm, though she also had some blood dried onto her face, as well as fresh blood beginning to seep just slightly through to bandage wrapped around her entire torso and right arm.
She may have looked like a young child, but the fact was that she was just about as old as Toushiro, and she was also a soul reaper. she was nowhere near a captains rank however, though she did have the skill and power to become one. Much like ichigo, she was a 'Substitute' soul reaper, only called upon in emergencies to the soul realm, but otherwise taking care of hollows in the world of the living. This womans name was Shai, her attitude exactly opposite of her names meaning. She was more like a snake. Beautiful to see for many, only able to be handled by a few, dangerous to anyone else who didnt know what the hell they were doing, and belonging to only one. That 'one' was toushiro, though neither would have the guts to admit it to anyone, much less, eachother.
The story does not start here, however, but a many long hours ago. Before the wounds had found their ways onto the soul reapers bodies, when the good friendship between the two had been nearly severed by a few care less words by both parties.
As the two rest, they are re-living what exactly has happened, except this time it is in the sanctuary, or in this case, hell hole, of their dreams. It all started in the early afternoon, with a meeting scheduled between the two.

As you rest against the gaurd bar along the dirt road, you bring out your phone, looking at the map of the city and watching it closely for any spiritual pressure from a certain hollow that you were after. The wind gently blew through your hair, bringing with it the sweet scent of cherry blossoms as ice blue eyes looked up from the screen to look to the sun. You shielded your eyes for a brief moment before closing the phone abruptly, shoving it in your pocket and looking back over your shoulder down both directions of the road, and at last to the stairs behind you leading up to a small shopping market. It was empty today, unusual for the mortals that usually were bustling about by now, but you simply shrugged it off as you enjoyed the silence, waiting for a friend to show up. You drew your gaze back to the scene before you, the rest of the city layed out beautifully under the soon-to-be-setting sun.
Light foot-steps forced your eyes away from the picture perfect moment, luring them instead towards the ground at the bottom of the hill that the guard rail was set on top of. A woman quickly making her way up to your position, a smile beaming as jade eyes shone with glee. "Toushiro, you wanted to see me?" shai asked simply, her voice contrasting almost shockingly with her expression as it seemed to sound almost bored, but this was nothing new to you, as was the fact she used your first name instead of 'Hitsugaya' or 'Captain'. "Yes shai, I did." you answered, shoving off from the rail to stand straight, placing your hands in your pockets as you stepped over it and into the road, waiting as she too leapt gracefully over the rail and stood at your side, her hair swaying gently in another gentle breeze that brushed by. Your face remained semi-serious as you tried to slow your heart rate down from its fluttering, starting down the road in a casual walk. "There was something i wanted to ask you." you started, keeping your gaze set on the path in front of you as you heard a questioning 'hm' from shai. You stopped, forest greens meeting with sky blues. "So? What exactly did you want to ask me?" she questioned, again with her unusual tone, her eyes alight with curious suspicion now as she came to stand in front of you. You sighed, her impatientience becoming more obvious with each passing moment. "I was wondering if you would be interested in going on a hollow search with me. There's one particular one I've been tracking, and frankly it gets boring just waiting around for it to show it's self." you shrugged as you drew your gaze away from hers and to the ground towards your right as you waited for the answer, which came more hesitantly than you had originally expected. "Sure, I'd love to. There hasn't been any real fun for me in a long time, so why not?" she replied, her tone letting a hint of eagerness break through as she lifted a hand to rub at the back of her neck. You nodded once before speaking again. "I'd have gone to ask anybody else, but they're all busy, so I was left with you as an only option." you let the words slip out so casually, not realizing how that really must've sounded until a few moments passed and the feeling of eyes stabbing into your back registered in your head. You quickly looked up, realizing shai was leaving, glaring at you over her shoulder, eyes that had once held happiness now letting anger swim around as you quickly ran to catch up to her, calling an apology after her. "Shai, wait! I didn't mean it that way!" After going on a few more feet, she stopped and looked back, waiting as you slowed to a walk, coming up to her side and heaving out a sigh, rubbing the back of your head as you tried to think of a way to explain what exactly you meant. However, before you could even get the first word out, she started speaking first. "Well /Captain/, could it possibly be that it meant that you think there's a difference between a normal soul reaper and a 'substitute' soul reaper? That the normal ones are better in some way?" she questioned, this time her voice giving way to malice as she stared you down, awaiting to see wether you would say anything or not. "You know that's not true, shai, it's just that... well, it's just-" you started, but stopped in mid-sentence when she simply turned around and started walking, shaking her head, calling something out to you over her shoulder that sounded something like 'find somebody else to degrade', and this made you rather irritated. Women could be so...emotional at times. You started jogging after her, but gave up on that when she too picked up her pace and kept herself a sizeable distance away from you. with each passing moment you spent chasing her, you felt the irritation rise higher and higher until finally you just stopped and turned around, walking back towards where you had been waiting before. "Fine, do as you wish. It's not like I had any control over you anyway." you called over your shoulder to her, raising your voice so that she could hear. you grumbled a small bit, letting out an aggrivated sigh before shaking your head and heading back to the apartment to get something to eat before you went out tonight to search for the hollow.

Your face remained expressionless as you continued jogging, but your eyes gave away what your heart felt. The deep hurt as he called out his last comment before leaving. You didnt dare to turn around, for fear if you did, he'd be there and would see what your eyes could not hide. So, you continued on as the sun continued to set over the city, and kept on going until the moon was beginning to rise, the pale orb an orange color for now, as it always was when it came over the horizon. You had no clue where you were or where you were headed, but it didnt matter anymore as you finally came to a stop, sitting against a tree and rubbing your temples. You replayed the scene over and over, knowing full well that you understood what the meaning of his words were. He hadn't wanted to bother you with the task, but unfortunately had no other choices. Of course, naturally, you weren't prepared to do anything just yet. You wanted a chance to vent and give Toushiro some time to calm down as well. And then, as if it was meant to be, you sensed a hollows spiritual pressure somewhere nearby. It was quite high, and you smirked to yourself as you released into your shinigami form, leaving your body by the tree as you sprinted towards the hollows location.
It didnt take long to find this hollow. You hadn't even traveled half a mile before you encountered it, coming into a small opening and leaping up into the air to dodge a swipe of its claws. However, as you assessed its actual spiritual pressure, you wondered how a hollow this strong could've possibly eluded toushiro for so long. you stared up at its massive snake like head, focusing on its eyes, one red and one gold, as it looked down at you, chuckling darkly. It had the upper body of a person, and the lower body of a serpent, fangs shining in the now pale moonlight as it let out a hiss. "Well, looks as if they soul society got tired of a captain who couldnt get his job done, and sent another in his place. What a shame.... and I was just starting to have fun with him too." the hollow seemingly seethed out, your immediate response to be drawing out your Zanpaktou and crouching down, sword held evenly out to the side as you watched the creature warily. Suddenly, you felt pain sear across your back as the hollows tail had curled around behind and given you a good whip, sending you towards its head. You fought to balance yourself in time as you brought your sword up above your head, swinging it down towards the hollows head. The hollow grinned, revealing its teeth again before it curled around to dodge, claws finding their way to your skin as your kimono ripped, revealing the wounds. You landed on your feet, the warm blood trickling down your arm not dictracting you from the task at hand as you swiped your sword at the hollow, this time sending a wave of your spiritual pressure. The hit was a successful one, and was small enough to knock it of balance, but keep it alive while you started taking your anger out on it.
You attacked with spiritual pressure and the handle of your sword, giving the creature some good wounds without killing it so you could continue on with your venting. this, however, was a short lived plan as you aimed again at the head. You hadn't noticed yet, even with all of your experience, hollows eyes are to be red, the one gold eye not setting off any alarms until now, as the serpents jaws opened, revealing the familiar red light of an acero attack charging up. There was no time to dodge, and the only thing there was to do was to brace for impact. You lifted your arm to cover your head as you turned your face away, placing the sword broadside against the arm placed in front of your head. The beam hit it, and you let out a yell of pain as you were sent through a few good sized trees. Even though your zanpaktou had taken most of the hit, it still did a number on your body as you staggered to stand, blood leaking from a gash on your forehead as our vision swayed and doubled, but you recieved no mercy as the hollow struck you again with its tail, your form sent flying only to be stopped in mid-air by a slash of its claws again, more deep gouges forming on your arm and back as blood leaked at an alarming rate. You waited for the impact of hitting the ground, but it didnt come as you were grabbed by the throat, held in mid-air by the beast as it chuckled again. "And here I thought I was getting more of a challenge. Oh well, no use in wasting a good meal." he chuckled out, but then paused as he squeezed your throat, making you struggle before he laughed again. "But maybe I could have a little fun with my food first." he added darkly, before a large wave of electricity started surging through your body, the point of entry being your throat. You let out a blood curdling scream as pain covered every square inch of your body, the hollow simply laughing louder with each passing second.

You stood upon a street lamp, eyes closed as you concentrated for that hollows spiritual pressure. The only thing that was wrong with this scene was that you kept finding yourself getting side-tracked with trying to find shais spiritual pressure. "urgh, dammit shai, why did you have to leave on such a bad note?" you groaned out, shaking your head before the hollows presence hit you like a solid wall. With a slight sigh, you pushed off and started running across the sky towards the location. You didnt notice anything out of the usual or anything to be worried about until you realized you were passing where you and shai had met earlier that day....and that you were heading into the direction she had jogged off in. Immediately after the thought occured to you, a scream pierced the sky and made you stop momentarily. You recognized the voice, but you had never heard it used in a scream. You could see lightning spritzing around from an area not too far ahead, and you were only worried more by the fact that shais spiritual pressure was becoming increasingly harder to sense. You sped up, releasing your bankai as you came over the clearing, the site being one that made your blood run cold, and your heart skipped atleast 3 beats before you forced yourself to move. "DON'T TOUCH HER!" you yelled out, lunging towards the hollows mid torso and using your sword to pierce entirely through its chest. The beast let out a horrible screech before it swatted you away, sending you into the ground with your zanpaktou still lodged in its body. you quickly leapt to your feet, blood oozing down the entire left side of your face as you watched the hollow thrashing around before letting out a hiss at you, its eyes narrowed. "So you haven't been replaced I see." he waved shais body around, looking back to you as you clenched your fists and gritted your teeth, reaching down and picking up shais sword, slashing at the hollows tail and taking it off. the hollow screeched again, and this time let out a feral growl before he drew his gaze back to shai and tossing her aside, her body hitting the ground with a sickening thud and rolling a few times before skidding to a halt. Without another second to spare, you and the hollow charged at eachother, but as you came up to the massive creature, you jumped clear over its head, grabbing a hold of your sword handle sticking out of the hollows back, and slicing him in half. The hollow went down screaming, twisting and contourting and managing to slice you with its claws across your chest. the attack sent you skidding on your back, finding yourself scrambling to your feet as the hollow started crawling towards you, seething loudly. however, as he lifted his hand up to strike, a beam of spirtual pressure shot past your head, missing you by a meer inch as it zipped by and lodged its self in the hollows forehead. finally, the hollow went down, its body slowly starting to disintegrate. you turned around to see it was none other than shai who had fired off the final blow, her hand shaking as it held her zanpaktou pointed at the fallen hollow. you struggled against the pain searing through your ribs as you got to your feet, stumbling forward towards shai as she dropped her sword, nearly collapsing before you threw yourself forward to catch her, landing on your knees with her in your lap. "Shai, hold on, I'll get someone here to help heal you." you panted out, reaching for the headphone on your ear, but stopped as you heard her gasp loudly and throw you down under her, pinning you tightly as you let out a small 'oomph'. "Shai, what-?" you questioned, cutting off as you noticed her panicked gaze locking on yours before you noticed the red glow coming from behind her that was quickly getting brighter. However, before you could throw her out of the path of the acero, she let out a yell as it made contact with her back, slamming her body against yours with enough force to break a few more of your ribs. As the light dimmed, you coughed, blood choking its way from your throat. Your eyes were wide with shock, and for a moment, you were too afraid to look down to see if shai was even still alive. But, finally, you forced yourself to try to sit up, your eyes resting on shais form, which was now limply resting on you with her head on your chest. "....shai?" you questioned, grabbing her chin and delicately turning her face up towards you. Her eyes were glazed over, the once vibrant green now a foggy color. "I'm sorry shai...I'm so very sorry..." you managed to whisper. You could feel your heart sting, your throat constricting on its self as you let yourself fall limp as well, your vision swimming as you gripped at shais shoulders, pulling her off of your chest, then up and to the side, her head now resting on your shoulder as you pulled her against you, using your other hand to close her eyes before you rested your head against hers, your face buried in her dark hair and your palm resting against her cheek as your vision only got worse, the sound of footsteps and someone calling both of your names being lost to the overwhelming darkness, the last thing you remember seeing being Renji and Rangiku's familiar forms as they made their way towards you.

As toushiro finally stirred awake, he groaned quietly. Sky Blue eyes blinking open slowly. He, at first, was relieved to be awake, convinced the whole thing had just been a nightmare. Yet, the pain searing across his chest was enough to jerk him of that relief and throw him into despair, the reality of his friends death weighing heavily on him as he let his eyes close again. Voices could be heard, but only just barely. "...lucky to be alive..........took two acero attacks simeltaneously.........Toushiro could............dead by now........we're VERY lucky...........gotten to Shai.......lucky for...........was there........." he strained to pick up more of the conversation, not quite understanding what the bits and pieces meant just yet. His eyes slid open again, meeting the welcome darkness as a tear slipped down his cheekbone, though his face emotionlessy serious as always.
Unbeknownst to the captain, his partner in crime was already awake, struggling not to let out any noise to let on to the pain that sliced mercilessly along her back and arm, her throat burning like it had been set ablaze with gasoline. At hearing the noise of the blankets ruffling from the captain, shai let a weak smile cross her face, her eyes glimmering behind the darkness as she simply listened to him move and breathe. "I never even got the chance to let her know......" toushiro whispered to himself, just barely audible to shais ears. Now a slightly brighter smile creased the womans lips, her unbandaged hand reaching over to rest on the captains cheek. "what about now...?" shai questioned, her voice about as audible as toushiros.
At first, there was silence, and then she felt the warm embrace of toushiros hand on hers, their fingers intertwining as they stared at eachother through the curtain of darkness. shais grip tightened slightly on the captains hand, earning a small chuckle from him. "Wait a minute....does this mean I'm stuck with you now?" he asked, a clear hint of humor in his voice that revealed the question behind the question. "For all of my life." shai responded, the smile obvious in her voice as the captain let another small chuckle break from his lips. "That's what I was hoping." he responded, his head now against hers as she pulled him closer, curling up as much as she could and burrowing into his side without hurting either of them. Slowly, the two drifted back off to sleep, now in eachothers grasp while the others remained clueless about the happenings going on the the room just next to them.
